Even now, I am certain that I will remember 1993 as an important and pivotal year. After the whirlwind years of the late 80's and early 90's, I needed to slow down long enough to take inventory and collect my thoughts. This period of reflection seemed to have a natural evolution and life cycle, and figuratively, I have caught my breath. It was necessary, I am glad for it, and I am ready for 1994.
My basic activities are much the same as last year. By day, I work with Andersen Consulting in Washington, D.C. (where I do lots of "computer stuff"), and by night, I play my horn. At work, I have enjoyed some people and experiences in particular, but in the end, my heart is somewhere else. Patiently, I have been building the necessary foundation for an intelligent transition to the arts. 1994 will bring this change. Finally.
I had the good fortune of attending the Tanglewood Summer Music Festival once again, but this time, I attended as a spectator rather than a student. For two weeks, I was able to enjoy Tanglewood from an entirely different perspective. I even made some new friends when I was there. It has been fun to expand my circle of friends; I would hate to think that my only dear friends are old friends.
Actually, I did quite a bit a traveling in 1993 - Jackson, Mississippi; Miami, Florida; Crescent City, Florida; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Boston, Massachusetts; St.Charles, Illinois; the Northern Neck of Virginia; Blacksburg, Virginia; Bergen County, New Jersey; Baltimore, Maryland. I definitely put some miles on my ol' Volare wagon, which continues to run strong at 163,000 miles (and counting).
As I look ahead to 1994, I will continue to carve out the path I want. I have found that it takes longer than I hoped to change direction, but that is because I have my eye on long-term goals. In the meantime, I continue to seek balance among the people, activities, and influences in my life, and the good news is that I am finding the sort of balance that makes me happy. I still have lots of questions, but I am finding answers, and that goes a long way.
Best wishes in 1994, and as a friend of mine recently said, take care - no, take risks.
